This program will acquaint travellers with Brazil's rich annd diverse cultures and peoples. We will visit some of Brazil's most impressive cultural sites and natural wonders including Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, Iquazu Falls on the border with Argentina, and the city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil's first capitol. Our objective is to introduce our travellers to Brazil's natural beauty, while exploring Brazil's imressive mix of cultures. We will become acquainted with the dominant Catholic religioius heritage, but also Brazil's indigenous religions and the vibrant Protestant movements that are emerging as a powerful factor in Brazilian cultural life. We will become acquainted with Brazil's ethnic diversity and the unique culture that emerged in Brazil as the result of the mixing of different European, African and indigenous cultures.
In addition, we will explore the use of the Bible not only in the processes of legitimating slavery and colonization, but also in the faith based movements to eliminate slavery, colonization and ecnomic injustise.

Daily Itinerary (abstract)

Day 1 Depart Miami

Day 2 Arrive Rio de Janeiro, reception, orientation and introductions, touring as time permits

Day 3 Corcovado Mountain, Christ the Redeemer Statue, afternoon at leisure

Day 4 Ipanema, Copacabana, Red Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain, Favela tour by jeep, Rocinha Sport Center, Kinden Garden

Day 5 Iguazu Falls, Macuco safari

Day 6 The Argentinean Falls, long or short stroll (your choice), Puerto Canoas, Devil’s Throat, trasfer to Salvador da Bahia

Day 7 Historical city walking tour, urban development and community service projects, Axe Street Children’s Project

Day 8 Urban develoment tour, city tour

Day 9 Visits to mission sites and conversations with hosts

Day 10 Return to USA or continue with the elective

Elective: The Amazon and Rain Forest

Day 10 Flight to Manaus. Upon arrival, we will transfer to our hotel and from there enjoy a tour of Manaus, including the theatre, the floating dock and the city market

Day 11 We depart the hotel for a three hour drive through the jungle to Novo Airaio. From here, we travel by boat our lodge. In the afternoon, we will tour the archipelago by boat.

Day 12 Guided by an expert naturalist, we trek into the jungle to become acquainted with the fauna and flora of the region. We will visit a remote village and learn about the unique lifestyle and culture of the villagers, including their adaptability to local conditions.

Day 13 Sunrise excursion on the Amazon to experience the variety of bird and fish life, including an opportunity to see and perhaps swim with dolphins.

Day 14 Transfer to airport in Manaus for your connecting flight to your gateway city and return flight to the USA
