This pilgrimage will acquaint participants with the geographical and cultural settings of the New Testament. Additionally, since the pilgrimage will depart immediately after Western Easter you will be in Greece during Orthodox Holy Week and Easter. If you would like, you will be able to participate in the full range of Orthodox Holy Week and Easter observances and celebrations. The pilgrimage will begin in the north of Greece along the Via Ignatia where the Pauline cities of Philippi and Thessaloniki are located. We will examine Classical and Hellenistic influences on Paul and his churches. In the south of Greece, we will explore the archaeological testament of ancient Greece through extensive visits to the Acropolis, the Athenian and Roman agoras, Corinth and the Peloponnessus.

Daily Itinerary
(tentative and subject to local circumstances):
individual preferences will be accomodated when possible

Day 1 Depart USA

Day 2 Arrive Athens, transfer to flight for Thessaloniki, transfer to hotel for dinner, touring as time permits, introductions and orientation, overnight in Thessaloniki

Day 3 Pella (birthplace of Alexander the Great) with museum, Thessaloniki city tour, Old City walls, Citadel, St. Demetrius Church, Arch of Galerius (Acts 17: 4, 12), optional—Orthodox Maundy Thursday service, overnight in Thessaloniki

Day 4 Thessaloniki, Via Ignatia, Philippi, Kavala/Neapolis (Acts 16: 9-33), optional—Orthodox Good Friday service, overnight in Thessaloniki

Day 5 Transfer to airport, flight to Athens, driving tour of Athens, Acropolis, Parthenon, Erectheum, Mars Hill (Areopagus), optional—Orthodox Easter celebration, dinner on your own at a restaurant of your choice, overnight in Athens

Day 6 Free day (optional full day cruise to the Saronic Gulf islands of Hydra, Poros and Aegina; other options available), dinner on your own at a restaurant of your choice, overnight in Athens

Day 7 Agora excavations, Stoa museum, Temple of Theseus, dinner on your own at a restaurant of your choice, overnight in Athens

Day 8 drive to the Peloponnesian Peninsula via Corinthian Canal, & Cenchraea. Visit archaeological excavations of Corinth, Museum, Acro-Corinth (time permitting), overnight in Tolos

Day 9 Paleo Epidauros, Theatre, Asklepion, Propylaia, Museum, Nafplio, Palamidi Castle, dinner on your own at a restaurant of your choice, overnight in Tolos

Day 10 transfer to Venezelos Airport, return to USA, OR select from the elective below

Elective: John & Paul in Anatolia

Day 10 transfer to Izmir, touring as time permits, overnight in Ayvalik

Day 11 Pergamum, the Acropolis, the Ascelpeion, the Red Hall, overnight in Ayvalik

Day 12 Issa Bey Mosque, Selcuk Museum, the Artemision, Polio Aqueduct, overnight in Kusadasi

Day 13 Ephesus: the State Agora, Curetes Street, Slope Houses—optional, Library of Celsus, Marble Street, theatre. Arkadian Street, Church of Mary, overnight in Kusadasi

Day 14 transfer to airport, return to USA
